Though many have ...attempted to define desegregation, which peaked in the late 1970s, as either a success or a failure, there have been surprisingly few efforts to examine the actual experiences of the students who lived though it. Featuring the voices of blacks, whites, and Latinos who graduated in 1980 from racially diverse schools, Both Sides Now offers a powerful firsthand account of how desegregation affected students--during high school and later in life. Now in their forties, these graduates have indeed found that attending desegregated schools made them significantly more comfortable with people of other races. At the same time, however, this study also finds that while desegregation positively influenced individual students, it has done far less to change society as a whole.
